Merry-go-round @ Darling Harbour

Manchmal kann ich es nicht fassen, wie schnell die Zeit (hier) vergeht. Heute Abend gibt es das Grande Finale mit einem riesigen Feuerwerk bei der Harbour Bridge. Dieses Jahr werden auch zum ersten Feuerwerkskörper durch die Brücke geschossen, laut den News hier. Man darf gespannt sein :)

Sometimes I can’t believe how time flies (here). Tonight it’s the grande finale of the year with a huge firework at the Harbour Bridge. I’ve heard on the news that this year, for the first time, they’ll shoot  fireworks through the bridge. I’m curious :)

Kommen wir also zum Rückblick für diesen Monat:

Ich habe mal wieder die Gegend erkundigt und war dieses Mal in Balmain, u.a. auf dem dortigen Markt. Der Balmain Market scheint den meisten Touristen unbekannt, es handelt sich hierbei mehr um einen Second Hand Markt, wobei man so alles Mögliche dort findet: Von Büchern, CDs über allerlei Schnickschnack, ein waschechter Flohmarkt! Dennoch sehr gemütlich und nett und einen Besuch wert (Mein Favorit bleibt aber immer noch der Glebe Market).

Wer sich die Zeit nimmt und die Straße dort hinunter wandert (ca. halbe Stunde Spaziergang, immer geradeaus, vorbei an Wohnhäusern, sieht nicht nach Touristengebiet aus, ist es auch nicht xD) kommt am Ende der Straße an eine Werft (Balmain East). Von dort aus habe ich die Fähre nach Darling Harbour genommen, mit tollem Ausblick auf den im September 2015 neu angelegten und eröffneten Park Barangaroo Reserve (Im Bild im Hintergrund).

But now let’s get to this month’s review:  

Once again I’ve explored Sydney’s neighbourhoods, this time I’ve been to Balmain, also the Balmain market. It seems that most tourists don’t know about it, the Balmain market is more a second hand one, whereby you can find all sorts of things there: From books, CDs to a lot of nick-nack, a genuine flea market! It has its pleasant charm and totally worthy a visit (My favourite market is still the Glebe one).

If you’re there and have some time left, I’d recommend going down the street (ca. half an hour walk, just straight down, passing residential houses, it doesn’t look like a tourist area, maybe because it’s not xD). At the end of the street you’ll find yourself at a wharf (Balmain East). I’ve taken the ferry to Darling Harbour from there, having an awesome view to the new Barangaroo Reserve, opened in September 2015 (In the pic’s background).

Wer hier schon länger mitliest, weiß, dass ich eine Vorliebe für Museen habe. Also war ich mal wieder in einem: Diesmal im Powerhouse Museum. Dort gibt es momentan u.a. die Ausstellung „ The Art of the Brick: DC Comics“ by artist Nathan Sawaya. Einfach unglaublich, was man alles aus LEGO® Steinen machen kann! Hier ein paar Eindrücke:

Whoever read the last few posts, knows, I love going to museums. So I’ve been to one again: This time to the Powerhouse Museum. Currently they have an exhibition called “The Art of the Brick: DC Comics” by artist Nathan Sawaya. It’s amazing what can be built out of LEGO® bricks! Here are some impressions:

Das Powerhouse Museum hatte noch eine Menge anderer Ausstellungen zu bieten. Ein weiteres persönliches Highlight an diesem Tag war die Ausstellung von Collette Dinnigan: Unlaced. 

The Powerhouse Museum has also a lot of other exhibitions. One of my other highlights of the day was the exhibition of Collette Dinnigan: Unlaced.

Zum Schluss konnte ich einen weiteren Punkt auf meiner Australien/Sydney To Do List streichen:

Blue Mountains

Nur eine Autofahrtstunde entfernt von Sydney liegen die blauen Berge Sydneys (sie sind tatsächlich blau, siehe Fotos! :D) Bei der Ankunft dort merkt man erstmal, wie rein die Luft in den Bergen ist! Dort habe ich mir die Wentworth Falls angesehen. Hinab ging es auf dem Wentworth Falls Track, dann den National Pass entlang und zurück auf dem Shortcut Track. Ich will nicht groß drumrum reden, die Ausblicke lassen einen sprachlos, daher seht selbst:

Visiting the Blue Mountains

The Blue Mountains are one hour drive away from Sydney (and they’re really blue! Have a look at the pics :D) Arriving there, you first notice how pure the mountain air is! I’ve actually benn to the Wentworth Falls there. I’ve went down the Wentworth Falls Track, going along the National Pass and finally coming back via the Shortcut Track. I don’t want to talk around, the views were awesome, so have a look:

Sculpture by the sea - Coastal walk from Bondi to Tamarama Beach

Und wieder ist ein Monat vergangen. Am Monatsanfang (oder besser gesagt von Oktoberende) gab es hier in Sydney eine Kunstausstellung, die sog. Sculpture by the sea, eine Kunstausstellung im Freien, von Bondi Beach bis Tamarama Beach. Der Coastel walk von Bondi nach Tamarama ist an sich schon lohnenswert, mit all den Kunstobjekten und dem Pazifik im Hintergrund war es einfach unbeschreiblich schön. Meine Favoriten waren hierbei eine riesige Muschel, die je nach Windrichtung auch Töne von sich gab, und die Barbie Wave, welche auch den People’s choice award gewonnen hat.

And again another month passed by. At the beginning of the month (or moreover at the end of October) there was an art exhibition called Scuplture by the sea, an outside exhibit been placed on the way from Bondi beach to Tamarama beach. The coastel walk itself is worth going there, but with all the objects of art and the Pacific Ocean in the background it was just awesome! My favourite was a huge white shell, making noises whenever the wind hits it, and the Barbie wave, that also won the People’s choice award.

Das Wetter wird hier im Allgemeinen immer besser, d.h. es wird immer häufiger sehr warm (was ich von den ersten zwei Monaten hier nicht unbedingt behaupten kann… wenn ich mich daran erinnere, wie sehr ich im September gefroren habe… trotz Pullover…). Wie dem auch sei, da der Sommer so allmählich hier ankommt, bin ich immer häufiger am Strand anzutreffen. An einem Wochenende war ich in Manly (mit der Fähre vom Circular Quay, dauert ca. 30 min, wenn ich mich recht erinnere), das Wetter war einfach fantastisch, überall wurde Barbeque veranstaltet (oder Barbie, wie man es hier nennt). Der Strand in Manly war brechend voll, ebenso Shelly Beach (östlich von Manly). Nach einem „Life’s a beach“ Smoothie im lokalen Ben&Jerrys (die Eistorten dort sind der Hammer! ;) ging es am späten Nachmittag dann nach Hause.

The weather here just keeps getting better, which means, it gets more and more frequently very warm (which I can’t tell about my first two months here… especially when I remember freezing here in September… despite wearing pullovers…). However, summer is coming so I’m more often at the beach. One weekend I’ve been to Manly (by ferry from Circular Quay, taking ca. 30 mins, if I remember right), the weather was fantastic, people had barbeque everywhere (or Barbie, how it’s called here). Manly’s beach was pretty crowded, also Shelly Beach (east of Manly). After a “Life’s a beach” smoothie at the local Ben&Jerrys (the ice cakes are awesome! ;), we went back home at late afternoon.

Kein Besuch in Sydney ist vollständig, ohne im Taronga Zoo gewesen zu sein. Als eines der Must-see Attraktionen konnte ich das nun (endlich!) auch von meiner To Do List streichen. Mein persönliches Highlight waren die Giraffen, die wohl mit Abstand den besten Blick auf das Opernhaus und die Harbour Bridge haben :D (Tipp: Auf dem Rückweg zur Werft die Seilbahn nehmen, denn so geht es bergab und man sieht nochmal alles von oben {die Nutzung ist kostenlos, also im Parkeintritt mitinbegriffen}).

You can’t say you’ve been to Sydney without going to Taronga Zoo! Finally I could cross that off my To Do list. My highlight were the giraffes, having the best view to the Opera House and Harbour Bridge. (Use the cable car on the backway to the wharf, so you get a nice view from the top as it’s going downhill and you can see everything from above {it’s free, or moreover included in the entrance fee}).

Ein weiteres Highlight im November war der Besuch des Ku-ring-gai Chase National Parks nördlich von Sydney. Der Tagespreis bei der Einfahrt (sind mit dem Auto hingefahren, mussten beim Passieren der Schranke zahlen) waren 12$. Der Ausblick: Unbezahlbar. Nach Bestaunen des fabelhaften Meeresausblicks (mit Blick auf Palm Beach und Barrenjoey Headland mit Lighthouse) sind wir dann durch den Wald auf einem Pfad zum Strand (West Head Beach) hinabgestiegen. (Der Rückweg war entsprechend schwieriger, da es sehr weit bergauf geht).

Another November Highlight was the visit of the Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, north from Sydney. The entrance fee for a day was 12$ (we went there by car, had to pay when we passed the gate). The view was priceless. After gazing in amazement at the beautiful ocean view (with sight to Palm Beach and the Barrenjoey Headland with lighthouse), we went downhill on a path to the West Head Beach. (The way back was consequently much more difficult, getting back up all the hill).

So allmählich kommt hier die Weihnachtsstimmung auf, sodass man schon überall Weihnachtsangebote und Dekorationen sieht. Am Darling Harbour habe ich u.a. diesen Santa Claus hier gesehen:

Oktober – Good food month

Oktober steht im Zeichen des Geschmacks hier in Sydney. Den ganzen Monat lang gibt es hier Events rund um den guten Geschmack. Diverse Gericht der verschiedensten Küchen der Welt kommen hier zusammen, da weiß man gar nicht, wo man anfangen soll… am besten querbeet! :)

Oktober is the good food month here in Sydney. There are food events all through the month. A diversity of cuisines from all over the world – hard to choose where to start…:)

 

Meine Empfehlungen sind u.a. der Night noodle market im Hyde Park. Neben kulinarischen Leckerbissen gab es auch einiges vom Park selbst zu sehen. Hyde Park ist an sich wunderschön und auf jeden Fall einen Spaziergang wert! [Direkt neben dem Park befindet sich die St. Marys Cathedral ;)] Über mehrere Tage war im Hyde Park sogar die Kulisse des bekannten Cafes aus der FRIENDS Serie aufgebaut und es wurde kostenlos Kaffee ausgegeben… die Schlange war entsprechend lang :D

So far I can totally recommend visiting the night noodle market at Hyde Park. Besides treating oneself to some fine food, the park itself is beautiful to worth it walking through. On a few days there was even built up the cafe scenery from FRIENDS series where you could even get a coffee for free… thus the queue was very long :D

Erinnert ihr euch noch an die Royal Botanic Gardens, die ich im September erwähnte? Mittlerweile kann ich behaupten, fast die ganze Anlage abgelaufen zu sein… neben der Farnanlage und den Sukkulentengarten kann ich ebenfalls den Besuch der Art Gallery of NSW dort empfehlen! Der Eintritt ist für die meisten Ausstellungen frei, nur für einige Sonderausstellungen muss man ein Ticket erwerben. Ich hatte das Glück, dass bei meinem Besuch dort ein Konzert einer lokalen Musikschule (?) stattfand, was ganz nett anzuhören war :)

Remember the Royal Botanic Gardens I mentioned in the September post? So far I can say, I almost walked through the most parts of the gardens… among the fern garden and the succulent garden, I can recommend visiting the Art Gallery of NSW. The entrance for most exhibitions is free, you’ll only need to buy a ticket for some special exhibitions. Lucky as I am, there was a concert from a local music school (?) when I visited the gallery. It was very nice with the music in the background.

Weiterhin habe ich per Zufall (oder durch eine glückliche Fügung… ich hatte mich verlaufen…) die White Rabbit Gallery gefunden, eine Gallerie für zeitgenössische chinesische Kunst. Am beeindruckendsten fand ich hierbei die verschiedenen Darstellungsformen, so gab es neben Statuen und Bildern, Collagen auch Videos, Installationen, die teilweise ganze Räume einnahmen (mein Favorit war hierbei die Installation von Li Hui, ein dunkles Zimmer mit grünen Lasern)

Further I found by default rather than by design (I got lost…) the White Rabbit Gallery, which presents chinese contemporary arts. The most impressive thing about this gallery to me was the diverse forms of expression, there were statues and pictures, collages and videos, installations, some of them even filling whole rooms (my favourite was the green laser room by Li Hui)

Desweiteren war ich auch im Museum of Contemporary Art. Auch hier gibt es viel zu sehen, empfehlenswert ist der Ausblick vom Cafe auf der Dachterasse, von dort oben überblickt man ganz Circular Quay mit Opera House und Harbour Bridge!

Moreover I’ve been to the Museum of Contemporary Art. This museum also offers a lot to see, I recommend the view from the Café on the roof terrace, from where you have an amazing view over Circular Quay with the Opera House and Harbour Bridge.

Direkt ein paar Straßen weiter vom Museum of Contemporary Art findet am Wochenende der Rocks market statt. Hier kann man so ziemlich alles möglich von Essen über Schmuck und Souvenirs erwerben. Der Rocks market (samstags und sonntags) ist neben dem Glebe market (samstags) und Paddy’s market (Donnerstag bis Sonntag) einer meiner Lieblingsmärkte geworden.

A few streets away from the Museum of Contemporary Art is the Rocks market, open every Saturday and Sunday, offering food, jewelry, souvenirs and much more. The Rocks market (Saturday and Sunday) became among the Glebe market (Saturday) and Paddy’s market (Thursday to Sunday) one of my favourite markets.
